Newsletter February 2018

What has seemed to many people to have been a particularly long, dank and gloomy winter has nevertheless seen activities at the Club continue throughout the past few months. Now with the prospect of better weather to come (once the arctic blast has gone) this seems a good opportunity to update members on various matters of interest.

At the Annual General Meeting in November, the following were elected as Officers and Committee members:-

Chairman Alan Pyant
Vice Chairman Mark Hiles
Honorary Treasurer Marylin Brooks
Honorary Membership Secretary Marion Denney
Ladies’ Captain Susan Archer
Men’s Captain Jon Weg
Club Welfare Officer Cherry Williams
Committee Members Michael Brooks, Will Jones, Julian Larter, Claire Francis
Club Coach Paul Macintosh

Also at the AGM members received the final report from Cherry Williams in her last season as Ladies Captain. During her captaincy the ladies team produced some outstanding performances and in recognition of her leadership of the team over several years Cherry was presented with the Endeavour Trophy.

League Tennis

The Men’s and Ladies’ teams are part way through the matches in the Winter Leagues with the following results:-

  • The Men’s team has won one, drawn one and lost three with one match still to play.
  • The Ladies’ team has won two, drawn two and lost three matches so will finish in a comfortable mid-table position

Junior Tennis

Weather permitting, the Junior Tennis sessions on Saturday have continued throughout and Coach Paul has been encouraged by the improvement shown by many of the youngsters – some of the youngest have been receiving additional coaching during the week.

Cardio Tennis

The regular sessions of cardio tennis organised by Paul have been a particularly enjoyable feature of the winter programme and for anyone who has not taken part so far I would encourage them to give it a try.

Wimbledon Ballot

This is another reminder that the Club’s allocation of Wimbledon tickets will be based on the number of members of British Tennis who have “opted in” to the ballot and only those members who chose to do so will be eligible for the draw when it takes place in April. The entry form for members wishing to take part in the club draw for tickets will be posted on the noticeboard.

Maintenance

As part of the ongoing maintenance cycle and to keep the courts in the best possible condition, moss treatment and cleaning was carried out in January. The growth of moss is a perennial problem on hard courts and although it can be killed by chemical treatment, the courts need to be regularly swept of the dead moss and leaf debris. This is not something that can be left to the Committee alone and I would ask all members to consider helping out with this task. It is also important that the third court (the back one) is played on regularly since this helps to keep the surface in good condition.

We have received notification from the Environment Agency that they will be carrying out work to the river bank on or after 19th March which will involve the passage of heavy plant up the access track. Members should be aware that this could involve some damage to the track (which will be made good) but that also care should be taken when these vehicles are on the move.

Subscription Fees

The Committee has considered the level of subscriptions for 2018. After a number of years with no increases the subscription was increased in April 2017 from £115 to the current £120. With RPI now close to 4% and with cost increases being experienced in a number of areas it has been decided that the subscription for senior members should increase from £120 to £125 with effect from 1st April. The subscription for Country members and Young Persons will increase from £60 to £65. Junior subscriptions will remain unchanged and the Parent/child membership will be deleted..

Committee Updates

Finally, the Club Chairman and the Club Treasurer both announced at the AGM that, after serving for many years, they will be standing down at the end of their current term of office in November. They would be happy to talk to any members interested in taking on these roles and who wish for find out more information on what the roles involve.

With kind regards,
Alan
